PLAINEFIELD, Ind., April 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — First Lady of Indiana Janet Holcombwith Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Director Dan Bortner and Executive Director of the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation (INRF) Jody Kressjoined Duke Energy Indiana State President today Stan Pinegar and company employees to plant 5,000 trees in the Ravinia State Forest in Morgan County.

The Indiana DNR Forestry Division provided northern red oak, white oak, and walnut trees to volunteers who then planted them on several acres of land at the west end of the park. As the trees mature, they will reach 100 feet tall with a lifespan of 300 to 600 years. The dense forest habitat that volunteers have helped create today will provide rich feeding grounds and thermal cover for wildlife in the future. Creating forest habitat also benefits people, as woodlands sequester carbon dioxide and help purify the air.

Indiana State Representative Peggy Mayfield, Morgan County Administrator Josh Mesmerand county commissioners Kenny Hale and don adams also participated in the event.

The voluntary effort supports Indiana Governor by Eric Holcomb commit to planting 1 million new trees statewide by 2025. Since the launch of the ForestIN initiative two years ago, MNR’s Forestry Division helped plant 220,200 trees in Hoosier State Parks and Forests.

Ravinia State Forest, formerly part of Morgan-Monroe State Forest, is located in Morgan County directly across from Burkhart Creek County Park. It encompasses 1,500 acres of forested hills and valleys and offers opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and picking nuts, wild berries, and mushrooms.

Since the creation of the Ravinia State Forest in 2020, the Duke Energy Foundation has awarded the INRF $150,000 in grants to support new features and upgrades. Projects include improvements to three parking lots, two new shelters with electricity and running water, improvements to signage and trail system drainage, and the addition of picnic tables and grills, among others.
