  • An innovative service for nuclear facilities provides personalized and immersive 3D simulations.
  • The solution provides customers with a way to address operational challenges and opportunities, while improving efficiency and reducing costs.

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, June 1, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Duke Energy One and L3Harris Technologies today announced a customized, cost-effective solution for nuclear power plants that will provide comprehensive 3D simulations of operating nuclear facilities.

The new service will improve response preparedness and efficiency while helping to improve safety and reduce costs.

The 3D of Duke Energy One Metrology services program designs 3D as-built models of nuclear power plants, specifically designed for each facility, using state-of-the-art 3D laser scanning technology.

L3Harris then combines the data with an immersive and collaborative environment that offers a suite of productive decision-making tools ranging from scenario building, radiation simulation, live plant simulation links, data and enterprise resource planning (ERP) integration, enabling access to critical asset information in one place. Immersive simulations can be coupled with a unique, headset-less display environment for teams, known as Orchid® IX.

Precise operational solution

The real-world data provided by these immersive simulators can help nuclear facilities predict what may happen in their specific environments. This knowledge can enable them to coordinate complex tasks between sites and multidisciplinary personnel, saving time and money, improving safety and mitigating radiation risks. Immersive simulators for nuclear power plants can also serve as critical assets for planning outages and detecting unforeseen difficulties that, if left undetected, could have significant financial impacts. In addition to customized 3D laser scans of the internal areas of their nuclear facilities, the solution includes training services customized for each nuclear facility.

“Nuclear energy – both existing facilities and emerging technologies – is one of the pillars of a clean energy future,” said Lon Huber, senior vice president, pricing and customer solutions at Duke Energy. “This suite of tools can create personalized virtual spaces that mimic real nuclear facilities – giving nuclear operators access to realistic layouts and making it easier and faster to develop plans to ensure continued safe, reliable, efficient operations. and profitable.”

“We know how critical nuclear power is to individuals, businesses and communities around the world. And we understand the power of teaming up with other strong, progressive companies to put the tools necessary for success between hands of nuclear operators, which is why we are excited to work with L3Harris to provide the industry with a new way to stay on the cutting edge of safety, planning and cost efficiency,” said Huber.

“L3Harris has been designing and innovating for nearly 50 years for nuclear utilities for light water reactors, heavy water reactors, gas-cooled reactors and now small modular reactors. We are proud partners of Duke Energy One and to offer an unprecedented joint solution to improve the operation and maintenance of nuclear power plants for the current fleet,” said Rangesh KasturiPresident, Maritime International, L3Harris.
